Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure orthopaedic surgeons use to visualize, diagnose and treat problems inside joints, such as knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists, ankles and hips. An arthroscope is an instrument containing a bundle of optic fibers that projects an image onto a monitor in the operating room, allowing the surgeon to see inside a joint with minimal invasiveness. The surgeon is able to visualize structures in a joint and repair problems, such as torn or damaged cartilage or ligaments.

Since arthroscopy is performed with small incisions, one for the arthroscope and others for the surgical instruments, this type of surgery allows patients to recover much more quickly than they would from more invasive traditional surgery. This quick recovery time is especially important for athletes who wish to get back to their sports as quickly as possible. In addition, scarring and disruptive effects on the surrounding tissue are greatly decreased.

Adult Reconstructive Surgery and Total Joint Replacement

The vast majority of adult reconstructive procedures are joint replacement surgeries. The goal of joint replacement is relief from pain that is caused by damaged cartilage in the joint. The surgeon replaces damaged parts of the joint with metal and plastic surfaces that restore movement and function. The most common joint replacements occur in the hips and knees, but the technique is also effective for elbows and shoulders.

The surgeons at Carolina Sports Medicine offer the latest advancements in joint replacement surgery with special expertise in minimally invasive techniques, computer and MRI-guided surgery, partial and total replacements, and revision surgery. Recovery from joint replacement surgery depends on many factors, including the severity of the damaged joint and the patient’s mobility before the operation. Exercise and rebuilding surrounding muscles are important components of the recovery process, and our comprehensive physical therapy practice enables us to offer an excellent and convenient continuum of care.
